Editorial Guidelines
This page is just basic information for submitters. If you don't want to read all this, just contact the newsletter editor.
News Articles. We try to publish all articles and press releases received subject to space limitations. Local news and events from ISA members and local instrumentation companies get priority treatment.
Any topic of interest to those who work in or support the instrumentation or automation industry is welcome. This includes news about relevant regulatory activity or industry events. Applications notes, instructional articles, technical reports and case studies also make excellent articles, as do announcements of classes and seminars, personnel changes, office relocations and related news.
Press Releases. News-like press releases are generally printed as is. Press releases from local companies are always welcome and if you need help writing them, please let us know.
Please keep them in the 40-380 word range (see table below). Releases will be considered for publication at no charge if they are not promoting a specific product, service or money-making event. Press releases with words like "fabulous", "only $5,000" and "buy one get one free" are called
ads
and may be published at the equivalent display ad rate. Include photos or graphics as they will draw the reader's attention to your article. As with articles, we reserve the right to do minor editing, spelling corrections, etc. For more info about size, content, deadlines, etc., please contact the newsletter editor. * In the table above, a photo approx 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 inch in size is used to estimate word count. Any size photo can be use -- in general, deduct 35 words per square inch of printed size for any photos and graphics to be used the article.
File Format. To save yourself a lot of unnecessary work or expense, please contact the newsletter editor before beginning to put together your article, ad or graphics. Since we have to re-format them when composing the newsletter, we very much prefer "plain" text articles -- like TXT or Rich Text Format (RTF) instead of Word, etc. Send by email to the newsletter editor. Please warn us by phone ahead of time that you are sending something -- (714) 968-7151 -- and please send one file per email. If are photos or graphics to be inserted at a particular place in the article, please DO NOT embed them within the document. Instead, note where the photo goes using some kind of notation, like this:
========================================
Insert photo01.jpg here
========================================
Photos. Again, please send one file per email and do not ZIP it. Just about any photo file format you have with probably work fine. First choice is JPG (20-500K is fine). Other standard formats, including TIF, GIF or BMP, are fine too. The larger file the better up to a maximum of 1MB. Any higher resolution won't improve the printing quality with the small size photos printed in the newsletter. Prints are OK also, and can be returned upon request. Contact the newsletter editor for information about usable formats.
Look at some of the
past newsletters
to get an idea of how articles appear. If you have a basic idea of what you would like to say, please send it to us and we can help put it into a format that you will like.
Below is a typical 1/4-page article, shown both with and without a photo. This one introduces an event:

Graphics and Artwork. First choice for all graphics is PDF file. Second choice is TIF (20-800K, depending on the resolution required), but again, other standard formats, including JPG, GIF or BMP, are probably OK. The larger file the better up to a maximum of 1MB. Any higher resolution won't improve the printing quality with the small size photos printed in the newsletter. Prints are OK also, and can be returned upon request. Contact the newsletter editor for information about usable formats.
Publishing Schedule. Newsletters are scheduled to be delivered one week prior to the first section event of each month, twelve months per year. The deadline for display ads and articles is the tenth of the month preceding publication. If you would like to announce an event later on in the year, please go ahead and send us the information now. We will keep it in the file until the month that we decide to run it. You should always ask for a proof prior to printing for new material or if the material has changed.
Copyright and Responsibility for Information. Neither the publisher, editor, ISA nor the local sections are responsible for the accuracy of the information supplied by advertisers, copywriters, photographers or others submitting material for publication. We will publish them only in the issue that we select. Likewise, the responsibility of the information lies solely with the submitter. By submitting material for publication, you, the submitter, retain the copyright for all articles, graphics and photos submitted. It is the responsibility of the submitter to obtain any required rights to use any photographs or other materials prior to submitting material.
Reprints and Extra Copies. If you would like a few extra copies or a reprint of your article or ad as a high resolution 1200 dpi PDF file suitable for commercial printing (for example, with the front cover on one side and the article on the back), just let us know and we will send them to you at no charge.
